I was down and out. Out of a job and flat broke, I was doing anything just to pay the bills on my tiny one-room apartment. A friend mentioned starting a business of my own, but what was I good at? Deciding to start small, I put up posters, advertizing myself as an errand boy. I started off with several odd tasks, but none as odd as the plain typed note I received weeks later, telling me to collect documents from an old bank vault turned urban storage unit. I thought the place would be hip, filled with hipsters or whatever the passed for cool these days. I was instead led to a dank corridor with little light. To my right was a wall of safety deposit boxes, each metal door banged up pretty good and sporting rust marks more akin to blood stains. The key lay warm in my palm, and with a shaky breath I slid it home in the lock. I was worried what Id find in there as my mind ran wild with the possibilities. To my relief, no bloodied hand or red stained weapon resided in the box, just the documents that were promised. Snatching them up, I broke the surface and squinted into the daylight. Hurrying along to finish my task and receive my paltry sum, I felt the whiz of a bullet as it barely missed my skull. With reflexes born out of habit from my youth in the army, I dropped and rolled, avoiding a succession of ammo pelted my way. That was the beginning. Only the beginning. You see, I hadnt realized it then, but Id just signed up as a scapegoat for some mafia men, and I wasnt about to be let out of my "contract" early. Dead or alive, I was going to be the target their enemies assailed. Thank goodness for my training...
